seattle case study house

This prototype is designed for a professional couple (one of whom works out of the home) with two children, but can accommodate a variety of family types and living arrangements. It is designed for a “skinny” lot.

The house is an elongated tube, with the entry, circulation and storage along one side. The open stairway leads up to a penthouse, and acts as a solar chimney, allowing the house to be naturally ventilated. The roof terrace affords extra views that are so desirable in Seattle. The penthouse is topped with photo-voltaic panels, mounted on a movable track that provides shelter on rainy days.

The house is wrapped in rain-screen siding, to modulate the light entering the house - in places (as at the stairway) this screen runs over the windows.

The two-car garage is buried, and the backyard terrace runs over it to maximize outdoor space.

Floor area statistics:

Main Floor - 780 s.f.;

Upper Floor – 740 s.f.;

Garage – 340 s.f.
