This project is a remodeled
1940's era house, in the Hawthorne Hills area of Seattle. The
owners needed more space, and
wanted to add character to what they felt was a characterless house. They especially disliked the cramped spaces
and low ceilings. In the process, they wanted to use
"green" building products, both for environmental and
health reasons.
The exterior of
the house blends in comfortably with its neighbors, but the
clients really wanted to express themselves on the inside, which
has a more contemporary flavor. Existing walls were removed to
open up the plan. Common materials and details, along with the open plan, tie
these spaces together. Each room has its own character,
defined by strong elements, such as the slate fireplace, the
steel and wood open stairway, the colored wall at the Kitchen.
This project was featured in the Seattle Times' July 24 2005 edition of Pacifc Northwest Magazine.
It was also featured in the June 2004 issue of Fine Homebuilding Magazine and in the February 2001 issue of Sunset Magazine, in which it won a Sunset Magazine Interior Design Award.
This project was done in collaboration with Mithun
Architects.
